Martha admits to Alf and Roo that she was terrified she was going to lose them if they knew about Kieran. She also tells them that Kieran is keen to meet them and he soon shows up in the Bay. Vroom returned to filming in 2000, for a storyline which sees Lance back in Summer Bay to attend the wedding of Sally Fletcher and Kieran Fletcher . Vroom said that Lance had grown up and "matured" in his absence and "won the respect of his peers" in his army career. Though Lance's love life does not fare as well and he does not talk about it much upon his return. Vroom said "he admits he's been seeing a girl who upset him quite a bit, but that's all".
Kat calls Births, Deaths and Marriages so that they can get Luke's death certificate, but there isn't one. An unknown caller then calls Ash and the caller turns out to be a man named "Patrick Stanwood". Ash is shocked as Stanwood sounds exactly like his late brother and he and Kat agree to investigate further. Kat has Stanwood's number traced by one of her colleagues and they head to Stanwood's address. After getting no answer from the door, Ash goes around the back and kicks the door in.
Alf Stewart
As Martin believes he is "the most irresistible male in Summer Bay", Lance is so impressed by Martin that he believes he is actually irresistible. Thomson said that the duo "stand out a lot" because of their over-the-top nature. A decade later, Lance returns for Sally's surprise 21st birthday party.
Their plan backfired though when they realised too late that Fisher had actually helped them get their jobs back. Their next prank was to torment local handicapped boy Nico into spraying manure all over Fisher’s garden but they were found out by Alf and Fisher ordered them to clean the lawn by hand. Having been banned from buying alcohol by Alf, over their prank on Nico, Lance and Martin decided to brew their own. Ahead of the pilot's airing, Lucy Clark of The Sun-Herald described Lance and Martin as "Two surfie blokes who are thick as two short planks". A columnist of the Daily Record said that Lance and Martin were the "thickest characters ever to grace soapland".

Kat protests that they are breaking and entering, but Ash continues searching the house, to no avail. Just as they are about to leave Stanwood's house, a man appears out of the bushes and is revealed to be Luke. Ash then punches him in the face and he and Kat leave the area and go back to The Farmhouse. When Ash tries to assist Leah in helping to care for Luc, she constantly pushes him away and lectures him on how to care for Luc.
Barry visits Lynn at the Fletchers and Lynn thinks she may able to go home. However, Carly overhears a conversation between Barry, Tom and Pippa where Barry reveals he and Julie do not have enough time for her but cannot tell Lynn the truth. Several months later, Julie makes a televised appeal for Lynn to return home and she does. Lynn returns shortly after Pippa gives birth to a new-born son, Christopher (Ashleigh Bell-Weir). Marilyn Chambers, played by Emily Symons, debuted on screen during the episode airing on 18 May 1989. Symons departed the serial in 1992 but returned in 1995 for another regular stint which lasted until 1999.

The serial's producer Alan Bateman said that the character would have a "very dramatic return". Bateman told a reporter from Sunday Mail TV Plus that a large cast meant that some characters such as Lynn needed to be "rested". Brett and Roo decide neither of them are capable of raising the child and agree to put Martha up for adoption. Neville receives an offer from his old ringmaster who gives him job back and he and Floss decide to leave the bay. The McPhees try to make a quiet exit by leaving a note on their caravan and they drive off.
Several years later Barbara returns to the bay at the same time Donald is experiencing strange things happening at home. It emerges that Barbara is trying to kill him to obtain his life savings. Rebecca discovers the truth and Barbara is arrested and later committed to a mental institution. Alf shortly disowns her but they reconcile when she returns for his sixtieth birthday party in 2005.
Marilyn then changes her mind about the vow renewal and they go through with the ceremony. When John's wife Gina dies of a brain aneurysm, Marilyn supports him through his grief and realises that she has feelings for John. Her friends dissuade her from asking him out as he is still grieving for Gina, but they eventually admit their feelings for each other and also go into business together. When John's adopted son Jett finds out about the relationship he is uncomfortable but eventually warms to Marilyn.
She later turns up at his book reading and when she runs from the room, Donald chases after her. Marilyn tells him that she has become a childminder to get over Byron. Donald later learns that Marilyn has cancer and flies to London to support her. Marilyn becomes friends with Steven Matheson and they eventually begin a relationship.However, it does not last and they decide to just be friends.
Vroom criticised the writing Martin and Lance received because he did not think it represented how young people behave. Home and Away's critics also scrutinised the writing "for a lack of realism". Thomson said the serial's early evening time slot often caused dialogue to be censored.
Brett falls into a depression after being cut off by Gordon and books into the Caravan Park. Brett then grabs Martha and flees to Melbourne with Stacey and Philip Matheson in hot pursuit. Philip tries to stop Brett but he slams his hand in the car door causing permanent damage. While on the run, Brett struggles to cope with Martha and is forced to take her to a hospital.
